Build a free standing frame.
The first idea is something like a shogi screen but then I thought of those free standing chalkboards we had in class rooms when I was a kid.
Basically, it is a "T" made of 2"x4" boards 7' high(or less if you have low ceilings). Turn them with the T side(like feet about six inches long) down and connect with a 2"x2" board across the top and bottom approximately the length of the largest blank wall.
With a plant in a heavy pot at each end (to keep kids or pets from climbing ) hang fabric from the frame, you can hide a hallway or ugly closet doors leaving openings to access them.
You can hang a lot of gathered fabric to make a tent effect, or just stretch it and staple it to the frame for a fresh canvas look that you can change the color of seasonally if you like.
Also if you stand your screen eight to ten inches from the wall you can hide ugly book cases or clutter and back light it with a lamp for mood and always present a fresh clean uncluttered line.

The first thing you need to do is paint it, if that's allowed. Choosing colors you like will really make a place feel like home. You can choose colors that are already in sofa pillows, bedspreads, etc. that you already have. That way, you won't have to buy a lot of new things and everything will appear very put-together.
