I have 3 or 4 cubes of glass from a car accident embedded in my forearm. Its been really irritating lately and I want to avoid going to a surgeon and having it surgically removed. It feels like it's moving much closer to the skin lately, like it wants to come out.

My father and mother both recommended "drawing salve" which is this black, very horrible smelling ointment to get the glass out. I'm trying it now and want to know if anyone has any experience with it, and what kind of shrapnel they used it for. Thanks in advance.

I forgot to mention that this accident happened 3 years ago. I saw a wound care specialist at the time who said if it didnt bother me that it didnt have to come out. It's starting to bother me now though. There is no infection or anything present.

Ichthammol does NOT come from fish. It is aluminum bituminosulphate. It is distilled from high sulphur oil shale. It has more in common with coal tar shampoos for scalp conditions. It is supposed to be safe and effective for topical use. It is said to have antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties. It is most commonly used for skin eruptions caused by infections such as boils or carbuncles. Along with ichthammol, drawing salve may also contain green soap, petrolatum, beeswax, and other substances. There is antecdotal evidence that drawing salve can help bring splinters and wasp stingers to the surface of the skin. No idea if it would work on glass shrapnel.
I used to have two pieces of glass in the ball of my right thumb, also from an auto accident. It took months, but they both worked their way out on their own. Redness followed by a fluid-filled bump that looks like a pimple will be the first indications that it is coming out. I covered it with a bandage and put antibiotic cream on it. It took about a week for the largest one to emerge far enough to pull it out with tweezers. Hope this helps.

I am a mechanic and once I stepped on an old style pointy oil dropper piercing through my sneaker and into my foot. the puncture healed but still felt like something was in there. after about six weeks or so I put the salve on it with a band aide full time within a week a blister formed. I popped it and out came a piece of my sneaker. I healed rt away after that

Yes, It really does work. I have used it for over 50 yrs. It will draw out a rose thorn or a splinter, not to mention any infection from cuts.

Yah, I'm with Wayne D all the way, maaaaaaaaaaan. Everyone should just always, always see a doctor about EVERYTHING. Look, they usually have great big boat payments to make, and those medical conventions they love to go to, with the all-you-can-eat child prostitution buffets and the "800 ways your patients are dumb schnooks" symposia — my GOD, you would just not believe how much it costs to attend one of those. But worth every penny, of course... especially if it's YOUR penny. So have a heart, jeez, what ever happened to charity?

When the pieces are moving to the surface, as yours were, ichtammol salve may help that process - I don't know. BUT the salve is ideal to apply to the places you took the glass from once they're out.
