My bf told me that when he was 17 he became an atheist....and i asked him why he did that? he told me it was because he grew up going to private christian schools and in church and all that and He said it was because of his mom trying to force him to go to church every sunday. so i asked him were you Really an atheist? and he said no, it was just like a rebellious thing. and then i said, cuz if you really Were an atheist, we wouldnt have much in common. and he said, yah we would, we both like spaghetti. and i said, are you trying to make fun of the 'Flying Spaghetti Monster'? And he said 'What?!' and i said, atheists worship a flying spaghetti monster. and he said WoW.

I should post a question too i guess. Why did you become an atheist?

Definitely a rebel and not an Atheist. My big brother's an Atheist. And he's in the Navy. :D And don't make fun of Atheists. It's a pretty respectable religion.

Read The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and lighten up. It is a light hearted book in the "comedy" section of the book stores.
It has nothing to do with atheism. The main point the author (Bobby Henderson) was trying to make was protecting the rights to freedom of religion and the separation of church and state.
Anyone of any religion can appreciate the importance of those 2 basic American rights. And he did it in a humorous way.
He never said anything about atheism...so you are either ignorant or bitter...
But now that you know that the 2 are unrelated you can try and inform yourself about what Atheists really believe.
I went to Christian schools K-12 and though I am not a Christian nor an Atheist but I respect both religions rights to exist and those that follow either faith as individuals. Your b/f may have been going through some rebellious phase...but it is his to go through. You can't judge him for his beliefs even if they are temporary. My faith is stronger than ever now that I have been given the chance to explore spirituality on my own terms.

I'm not an atheist, but I can totally relate to your boyfriend about the church thing. I grew up in the Pentecostal church. For years and years and years my family went to church five times a week. We had a Sunday morning service, then a Sunday evening service. There was also a regular Monday night service, Wednesday night service, and a Friday night service. If there was a visiting evangelist, who always claimed to be poorer than dirt, yet still drove a Cadillac, we went to church twice on Sunday, then every night Monday through Friday. I remember always being happy when the offerings would die down so the visiting evangelist would leave, so we could go back to the 5 times a week thing. Mind you, because my family was very poor, we took public transportation to do this! I used to think, I've gone to church enough for 20 lifetimes.

I have to tell you, it took me years and years to work through the crap I was exposed to at my church. As teenagers, we used to joke that the church motto was, "...if it feels good, don't do it."

Now, I've just cultivated a relationship with God. I never step foot in church, which none of my relatives understand. They don't say it to my face, but they think I'm a heathen.

I hope your boyfriend works through his experience. I always say, there's nothing like religion to mess up a perfectly good Christian.

I'm not an Athiest but you can become one when your parents force a religion on you. I went to a Christian Private school and now i refuse to be christian. It's as simple as that. And as far as the flying spaghetti monster... I think someone's full of it cauze i've never heard of that before of all my years of studying religion.

Not an atheist, but an agnostic:

One of the most important reasons was that my church
a) taught me that Christianity and evolution were incompatible
b) lied to me about the evidence for evolution
c) I found out they lied to me

So, if I figured if "a" was true but they were lying to me, I had to reject Christianity. No other religions were readily available for me to turn to, so I rejected religion in general.

While I'm at it....
My church also taught me that missionary work was necessary so that people who have never heard the word of Jesus could have their souls saved.

I figured that a God who would eternally punish people WHO HAD NEVER HEARD OF HIM for not believing in him was, at best, problematic.

Clearly I went to a right-wing-fundy type church, and I know that isn't all of Chrisitianity, much less all of theism. For example, I've learned that there is no necessary conflict between religion and evolution, but I also found that my life lost nothing when I rejected theism. So here I am!

It's not worshiping a flying spaghetti monster. At least read the website. I'm not an atheist, agnostic, and it's what feels right for me. No bitterness, no rebellion, no anger. I'm happy.

After studying various religious texts, talking with believers of various faiths and even college professors (both secular & religious) I came to the conclusion myself that deities do not exist. I was much older than a teen so it wasn't a rebellion.

He is a rebel, not an Atheist.

I dated many christian girls that had no idea. It is not like we preform some kind of dark rituals and kill puppies when ever we see them.

The FSM is not worshipped. It is satire to show you how silly you sound to us.

Doubt. (I was much older than a teen as well)
