Cheesey as it sounds - make something for the guy: how about a framed photograph, or a piece of jewellery? Or go down the fun line: buy him a replica car and tell him you've got him a porsche for his birthday!
Of course, we men can be fickle - it's possible he really DOES want something, he's just too proud, stubborn or even bloody-minded to admit that he'd like something from you!
