Many new-agy movements preach such an apocalyptical event, expecting the arrival of "ascended masters".

Some of this mis-information is based on the incorrect assumption that the Mayan Long Count calendar ends on 12-21-2012, but it doesn't. That day is the beginning of the 13th Baktun (like ours going from 1999 to 2000 but a Baktun is 396 years long). Time doesn't end. Calendars don't end. When your 2005 wall calendar went to December, did you think time was ending or that it was time to get a new one?
Also on 12-21-2012, which is the Winter Solstice, at dawn there is a once in 26,000 year astronomical alignment between the Sun and the Milky Way which to the Maya signified the rebirth of the Sun and the beginning of a new world age. Notice that I said nothing about anything ending on 12-21-2012. That's because it's a new beginning. Metaphysically, energetically, this world is already dead and has been for 10-20 years.
As far as ascended masters go, I suppose for an event like that they might make a mass showing but frankly, they're all around all the time already. You just have to know how to find them.

No, the world will not end, but there is a chance that stuff will change a lot, in nature and such (this year was indeed predicted to be a turning point of eras). We may not even notice it.

Further more, there are some long cycles (hundreds and thousands of years) that are due to appear relatively soon (some volcanoes and other phenomena)

Every age since Nero's was throwing Christian's to the lions and rome was burning have predicted the end of times, every end of the millenia, every end of a century, every invasion by the scourge of god, the black death, the 7 day adventist's big bust in 1912, etc, etc....

You can believe what you want. The next apocalyptic event will most likely be an asteroid hit or accidental launch of nuclear weapons and you won't have any warning when that takes place.

Instead of asking will the world end in 2012, you should be asking yourself will I live until 2012? Can you be sure you will be alive tomorrow? So since no one knows when the end will be, you should live your life as if it will be now. In this case when you die you will be the first to meet the lord and be with him until His second return. Those who are dead in Christ will receive the spiritual body before those who will be alive at His second coming. Get ready, the time is now. Be like the wise 5 virgins, not the foolish ones.

Nope, don't believe it. It will come and go just like all the previous doomsdays we've been warned about. June 6, 2006 (or 6/6/6) ring a bell?

The year 2012 will be the year of the great disappointment when the world does not end.

mayans believed so, thier calaner system was made up of gears and depicted the gears stopping in the year 2012. this same culture wrote almanacs (without telescopes and modern technology) that are still accurate to today's weather.

and jahovah's witnesses beleive the world started its "last days" in 1914, and was to last some "short period of time".

Ive never heard of this "ascended masters" thing.

Read your Holy Bible... Jesus said that "when you see them encamped around Israel you know the time is nigh" Plus many others. There must be the "abomination of desolation" or abomination that makes desolate, and the end of the daily sacrifice- Pray in Jesus Christ's name to God to understand the Holy Book before you begin for best results. Godspeed! XOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXOXO
