He meant that life dominating sins must be dealt with in a radical way. So, if your sin is sexual, stay away from those things that cause the urge. Strip joints, adult books stores, even the Internet if necessary. You have to "cut off" the sources of your temptations, and deal with them. God provides us a way out of them. (I Corinthians 10:13)

I recently got a book called Idioms of the Bible Explained, by George M. Lamsa. Mr. Lamsa's mother tongue is Aramaic, the language spoken in in the time of Christ. He has also translated the Bible from the orginal Aramaic into English.

In this book he states:

"An idiom is a saying that foreigners cannot understand without being trained and is often taken literally and therefore misunderstood."

"For example, in Aramaic we say, "If your hand offends you, cut it off," which means, "If you have a habit of stealing, cut it out." (or stop it).

An example of an English idiom, "He is in a pickle," really means, "He is in trouble." Therefore, idioms and colloquialisms are not toe be taken literally."

What he is saying is that in the language of Jesus' time, this saying simply means that if you are sinning, quit sinning!

That means we can now have a relationship with God through Jesus. And since He loves us first when we were yet sinners for giving even His life for us, we ought to love him back with all our heart, mind, soul and strength and that we have to love one another. Now that we become the friend of God we will be willingly and happily and joyfully do His commandment as His yoke is easy and His burden is light. Compare to the bondage of sin that rob us of our joy, health and soul and spirit, we can now have the fullness of joy of being in His presence. If you have been there, you won't turn back my friend. Christianity is not a religion. It's a beautiful relationship with our father in Heaven.

Most people think that each one of us is just one person. For most of my life I thought that also. But I now know that we are many people. Our soul or mind is comprised of many "spirits." And that is where we can find the Spirit of Truth. Not all of these "spirits" are good and not all have our welfare in mind. So if you discover and recognize one of these "spirits" for what it is, then you should "cut it off." The way to do that is to refuse to listen to it or talk with it in any way - certainly not obey it. In other words, totally ignore it.

Once you sin, recognize it, ask God's forgiveness and ask him to help you to remain without sin in that area.

However, in the Old Testement, before Jesus was born, they actually believed that you should destroy whatever made you sin. THAT is why Jesus was born, so he could be the sacrifice for our sins. Beautiful, huh?

I'm Agnostic but was raised a Christian so I can tell you from a Christian perspective.

It can be taken literally if necessary. However, he meant do whatever possible to keep yourself from sinning. If you are, say having an affair with your secretary and you want to stop but you need the sexual stress relief, have sex with your wife or even fire your secretary if necessary.

Showing the terribleness of sin. That it would be better to cut the part off that was causing you to sin than to have to burn in Hell because you went ahead and used that member to continue sinning.

If something is causing you to sin, get it away from you.

If a TV show is causing you to sin, quit watching it. If alcohol is causing you to sin, quit drinking it. If your friends are causing you to sin, ditch them and find new friends.

That's what he meant.

It just means be careful, if you see something on tv for example that makes you think sinfully then stay clear of that. Temptation will always be there but sometimes people go where the temptation is instead of trying to avoid it.
