First, you need to clean up the spot she made with an enzyme cleaner. One brand is Simple Solution. You can buy it at any decent pet store. Walmart has a similar brand, but I can't recall the name. The enzyme treatment destroys the odor causing bacteria so the odor does not draw the dog back again. Don't use amonia or flowery carpet cleaning stuff. It's not the same and won't work as well.

Second. Put the dog on a schedule, and keep it. The dog had a heat already, so she is old enough to hold it for quite a while. Every three hours should be fine. Just remember that she will need to go out 20 minutes after she eats or drinks.

Now to actually train her: When you go out, put her on a leash, and take her to the potty spot (the one place you want to have to clean up regularly.) Stand there and be boring. Do not walk around, do not play, do not make eye contact, do not have fun. The dog may sit there and ignore the situation. Wait a ten or fifteen minutes, then go in and try again in twenty minutes. She might, though, actually look for her place and perform as intended. Immediately as soon as she is done, BIG EXCITEMENT! FUN! TREATS! (The good kind like hotdog bits, small pieces of cheese or cooked chicken, liver treats NOT boring grain based cookies) Give her the treat immediately then (if your yard is fenced) let her off the leash and have a game that she enjoys like fetch or tug or running. This way she gets a reward for going outside and she learns that it is important to get it over with right away so the fun can begin.

Many people will let the dog out until he does his thing then make him come inside as soon as he has done it. For a dog that's almost like punishment. The dog learns to hold it as long as possible so he can stay outside longer. You'll find yourself taking ever longer walks in the rain, the heat or the cold while Fido smells every blade of grass and pokes along.

Instead use off leash fun as a reward for successful potty breaks. You'll be amazed how well this works.

There is no reason why your dog should not learn this, but know that any mistakes are YOURS and not hers. Never punish mistakes, because she won't know why you are doing this. Smacking her or rubbing her nose in it will actually make your problem worse.

Patience, consistent schedules and positive reinforcement should have her trained in no time.

Crate training is definitely the way to go. There are lots of books about proper crate training and information on line. But if you don't want to go that route, then you are going to have to stay on top of taking your pooch out every couple hours consistently. Take treats out when you go, and as soon as she does her business, give her lots of praise and a couple of treats immediately. Each time you take her out, take her to the same spot too. As for the pee spots in your carpet, you need to get some good carpet cleaner to take care of that. She will continue to pee if she smells where she has gone before. (Also, if you have other dogs visiting you...they may be inclined to pee in those spots too...so you definitely want to clean them up very well.)

Look into the crate training method for dogs. I had a friend / roommate who used this method to train her dog to go to the bathroom outside, and prevent accidents in her house while she was out working during the day. It seemed to be hignly effective.

CRATE TRAINING this may take longer for your dog's breed....
it may take more effort and consistancy from you as well...First
if your pet soiled it's crate you must clean and remove the smell
from the crate, bathe your pet before returning the pet to the crate! YES EVERY SINGLE TIME! You must not put food in the pet's crate to eat while you are away...or if you do not intend to take your pet outside to potty right away. Everytime your pet has a treat this stimulates it to poop! However, you must keep water in your pets crate at all times. When it is time for you to feed your
pet. Take it outside before feeding to make sure it does not need to pee...then give your pet it's food for only 15 min. If your pet does not eat its food within 15 min. take it away from them...don't worry in a few days your pet will get used to only having 15 min. to eat it...it is ok..your pet will not starve before it learns this. Do not feed your pets treats until it learns to eat within the 15 min. Do
NOT rub your dogs nose in his poop or pee when your pet does this in the house or where-ever you do not want it to do this...INSTEAD...SIMPLY PICK UP THE PEE AND POOP WITH A PAPER TOWELL AND PUT IT IN THE FURTHEST PART OF THE YARD! YES EVERYTIME! Simply remove your pet from the crate and bring your pet to this area and stand around while your leashed pet is sniffing around ....your pet will get the idea very soon! Your pet will actually prefer the grassy natural area of which to poop and pee in! THIS IS COMPLETELY DO-ABLE...IT IS SOLELY UP TO YOU...HOW COMPLETELY DEDICATED TO THIS IS HOW WELL THE OUTCOME WILL BE
Be lazy and either you will put up with your smelly house for the life of the pet which could be 18 years for your dog's breed. Or
take charge...be determined... in 6 or more weeks you will have a great relationship with your pet...and then you can even have freinds come into a nice clean smelling home for life!
