My husband is a "sanitation engineer" and over the years he has brought me many treasures from the trash, such as a stained glass window, pottery, wrought iron plant stand. When I was a small kid, my brother and I used to check out the trash cans on our block regularly. We found some great things in them. We still laugh about it to this day.

Heck yeah! Every once in awile, I'll accidentally throw something away and need to go retrieve it later. Not pretty, but it happens.
I would proabably never actually dive IN a dumpster, but I have picked up old furniture and stuff that has been lying out in the alley for the trash.

Yes - I have been dumpster diving! In fact, I found a really cool rocking chair that had one screw missing from the arm, which I replaced and it is perfect now. I have also found a lamp that just needed a new plug. I'm not even embarrased about it - I look at it as committed recycling.

Yes, I've taken stuff out of the trash. I've also curb shopped, dumpster dived, garage saled, thrift stored & freecycled.
You can find all kinds of treasures out there. If you're handy with paint or repairs or crafts you can make it fantastic for your own use or resale. People throw away the most amazing stuff.'

Yes, i would, if the item looked recoverable or worth taking. It is not stealing as it has left posession of the owner, unless it was a persons personal trash on the street waiting to be taken away, and then it would be cordial to ask the owner. I have actually done this with several items in my posession, they turned out to be perfectly good items, and apparently the owner jsut didnt want them anymore. So I hope that helps.

In construction, its a fairly common practice. I have dived into a dumpster many times to salvage material that should not have been thrown away, and has a useful purpose.

Totally. I have never dumpster-dove, but I definitely would if the opportunity presented itself. I saw a news story about a woman who lived completely off things she found in other people's trash. If she couldn't use it, she sold it or pawned it for cash. You would be amazed at the things people throw away...
