One thing I ask of people, when I do their hair, is to bring a picture and it is best to get it from all angles. You are not stupid. Most people aren't sure of what look to go for and do not know how to ask for it. You can go online for pictures and you can look thru magazines. Here's some things to consider............

1. Do you want it longer on top? or on the sides?

2. If your face is thin, you can go with somewhat of a short top but you may need it longer on the sides so you do not look gaunt.

3. You can ask them to use the clippers on the sides but to scissor cut the top.

4. Do you want to part it somewhere? Where? Or comb it straight back or forward?

5 .Do you want to use gel or do you want it to just go as it pleases?

6. Take a good look at your face and it's shape. Is your jaw square, or pointed or average? Is your face round or square or oval? Is your head round? What do your eyebrows look like? Are your eyes close together, far apart, large or small? Is your hair curly, straight or wavy? Put it all together in your mind and then find a picture of someone's face that is similar to yours and try that out. Hair always grows or can be recut. Maybe you would look good with short on top with layers cut down and longer in back. If you go for long, do not go for the grunge look. Find a style, hair products and look your best. It doesn't have to be an all morning thing with getting your hair right but you can find a style that is easy to handle and attractive.

7. Find a new stylist that has some imagination.

Why don't you try looking in some magazines for a particular hairstyle that is good for you??? Then keep that picture on file. Then if your hair grows out a little, you can use that picture again. Good Luck.

Look through magazines and show them a picture of what you want. Then you won't have to talk.
