Puppies have two speeds, play and sleep. If ALL you get is sleep you have something wrong. When you say he plays a little, what does that mean? Two or three minutes? Fortyfive minutes? Two tugs on a toy then he's asleep? There is no way to know what you mean here. Yes puppies sleep a lot, but they should not sleep all the time. Watch for other signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, not eating or drinking.
Despite what others have said, your puppy could be very sick and too much sleep is a very good sign that something is wrong. If so he should go to the vet immediately. Puppies do not have much reserves of strength if they get sick. Better safe than sorry.
Unfortunately this is one of the worst places to be asking questions about the life of your new puppy. You don't give enough info to diagnose any problem, and we can't really ask questions. Plus most of us, including me!, are not experts. When in doubt, call the vet and ask them.
My only qualification to answer this question, other than 5 years in rescue work, is this: I knew my sister's pup was bad off when I let her go outside after waking up. She did her thing, then came back inside and in moments was asleep again. Turned out she had parvo and would have died if I had taken her out of town as planned that morning instead of to the vet. I was able to get an early and lifesaving diagnosis because I got the pup to the vet because she slept too much.
When in doubt see a vet.

VERY normal. A puppy has only one job: to grow!
A puppy eats, poops and sleeps. Most of it's energy is expended in adding bone and muscle mass. During whatever is waking hours, it plays because that is how a puppy learns. I plays very hard, for a short period of time, but tires quickly. It will plop down almost anywhere for a nap.
Long nap, short naps and everything in betweens. It has no energy left for much else. Take advantage of its time awake to bond with the puppy and begin its training to get along in a human world.

The cat box is fine to transport more safely to vet. You should address some of these questions to your vet. Put the cat food up where pup cannot get. They all love cat food but protein level and nutrients are for a cat, not dog and not a pup. Please be careful using any canned foods for now! We don't have all the answers yet on the pet food recall. Dry food better for tooth, gum health. Perhaps ask the vet although he may only suggest a high price food he sells. And keep in mind the high price MAY not mean as much as we have been led to believe. You have a 8 wks old baby that has known the comfort of its litter. Personally, I find that allowing some bed time with me makes a more secure and easier trained dog. I use a mattress pad just in case. However, it does not take long for most pups to awaken you to go potty. They rarely go in their bed unless no option. I have other mature females that help with the pups I foster. But all get their time in the bed room. Make her a blankie for beside the bed that is hers, with some toys or stuffed animal to snuggle. Thank you for being a caring owner and trying to do the right thing, including taking her to her vet!!!

Congrats on your new puppy. Let me try to help you out a little so you can get atleast a few straight hours of sleep. First things first. Puppy needs to sleep in his crate. Dogs are denning animals and they dont mind that small enclosed place as long as its not used as punishment. And another reason you dont want him sleeping with you is because alot of times they will start peeing on your bed and show aggressive behaviors. Your puppy is scared because this is all new. So put him in his little crate when you go to bed(after wearing him out with play). Keep him next to your bed for the next few weeks and when he whines just place your hand in front of the crate to let him know your there, But dont let him out of there. If you keep letting him out then hes just gonna whine more and more for longer periods of time. They do grow out of this. Just be patient. Mix a little warm water with a Premium brand puppy food. Choose a food that doesnt have corn or by-product in the first 3 ingrediants. He likes cat food because its high caloric and high fat content. Let kitty eat somewhere high where puppy cant reach it. No wet food for puppy. Not good on there teeth and its a bunch of extra BLAAHHH. The little box is fine to take him to the vet. Make sure he cant jump out of it. And keep some distance between him and other dogs right now. Just untill his shots have kicked in and all. Good luck honey with your new friend.

No puppies need lots of sleep, this is how they grow so fast! It doesnt take much for them to tire. Mine did this, sleep, potty, eat, and then as it gets a little older it will want to add play into that...so no worries, its perfectly normal!
