There are four kinds of tequila which can either be 100% agave or 51/49 or mixto (sugar comes from agave and other sources), 100% being of course the best.

Silver is not aged tequila
Gold is not aged but color and flavoring is added
Reposado is aged at least two months
Anejo is aged at least a year

Now to your question which is best, depends on you and what you like, people that like the pure taste of agave would choose silver... people which like more complex spirits with the characteristics of wood would say anejo, a combination of both reposado. Gold is considered a lesser tequila since it is normally a 51/49 or mixto.

So I recommend you choose a brand that is good such as Herradura or Tesoro and buy the silver, reposado and anejo of the same brand. Try all of them and decide for yourself.

its not necessarily about quality, its about aging... gold is a clear tequila that has been aged in oak barrells and take on a golden hue, adding some complexity to the alcohol and is therefore more expensive but realistically, a cheap gold tequila may have been artificially colored with caramel and will be worse than a silver, expensive one... go with Herradura, Patron o Don Julio - these are the better ones available in the US - only gold ones you should consider paying extra bucks for should be imported from mexico and say "anejo" on them meaning "aged"

The color doesn't matter in terms of quality.
Gold tequila is aged in oak giving it a more mellow flavor. Silver tequila is not aged so it has more of a fresh agave flavor. I prefer silver.

Patron seems to be the most preferred tequila.
