Why do so many people seeking to emigrate to Canada or the U.S. post requests for info here on Yahoo Answers -- instead of going to Canadian or American embassies?

I suspect it's because they don't really know who to ask, or where to look. There are only a few embassies and consulates around, and most people don't live near them and don't even know what we do there.

These days we turn automatically to the internet for information. But when people do web searches on those topics - if they even know how to search - they get a bewildering amount of information, much of it incorrect. They don't understand that a .gov web site is far more likely to have accurate information than a .com or .net. And they don't know the correct terms to search by, so can't find what they're looking for.

On top of all that, many people - encouraged by the media - think of their own governments as unfriendly and unhelpful, and don't know that both governments have extremely user-friendly web sites that are designed to give clear, accurate information to the public.

Finally, the question that I have is not so much why do people ask such questions here, but why do other people post answers that are made-up and wrong. I was always taught that if you didn't know something for sure, you should admit it, not guess. I've even seen answers chosen as "best" that were wrong.
