I have 2 Siberian Huskies and I have them both on an insurance plan with Banfield Pet Hospital, which is found inside most PetSmarts. It costs me $50.00 per month for both dogs ($25.00 per month per dog). So far the insurance has saved me $1,400 between both of my dogs. Last week, one of my dogs was attacked by another dog and received a laceration to her left side that took 8 staples to close it. Without the pet insurance, it would have cost me over $400 to get her stitched up. With the insurance, I still paid $200, but that is better than $400.00. The insurance covers routine visits and shots, plus I can take my dogs in anytime I have a problem or question with one of them at no additional cost. I wouldn't be without the insurance. There are other plans available with other companies, so check around and find one that best suits your needs. Oh, and to "shenango val" on up the board - do your research and homework - there is such a thing as pet insurance, you don't have to be rich to afford it - it's called being a responsible pet owner. The only thing "dumb" (as you say) about it is NOT having it! I hope for the animal's sake you don't own any pets, and I certainly hope you don't having any children of your own - would you think health insurance was dumb and only for the rich where your children are concerned?

There is pet insurance but if you read the fine print, there is virtually no way that this could save you money. It is offerred by many insurance companies since it offers alomost pure profit for them. There are so many limitations, caveats and exceptions it is just not worth it for a pet owner. To top it off, many come with an annual deductible and/or pay-out caps.
The insurance probably would not help you anyways since they would classify whatever your were just there for as "a pre-existing condition" and would not be covered.

Most pet issurance will not cover the routine care, unless you get the EXTRA rider for routine care. It can be $450 per year depending on the breed and age of the dog when you enroll. Look online and you can get a good idea of what it will cost.

Yes, there are quite a few. I'm not rich or dumb :) But I do have it. Mine and I think all have a reimbursement policy. They don't cover any pre-existing & you have to see a Vet within 30 day's of enrollment. Mine covers quite a bit. It is close to $400 a year but it covers most of what I paid when my Lhassa became ill & then put to sleep. JMO Sheila

Banfield Pet Hospitals....Which are inside most or all "Pet Smart" stores, offer a service that gives you two or three free check-ups a year and if your dog needs vaccinations or shots, they remind you when they are due and provide hefty discounts...They take a automatic deduction from your checking account or credit card each month for each animal.....I belonged to them for 8 years and was very pleased....It sure was worth it for my 2 dogs....Good luck!

Yes there are many companies that sell Pet insurance. As you can tell it is almost as expensive for Pet Health care as it is for yourself. Here is a link for one of the companies.
