Well, it really depends on what you want the camera for? Do you want a party camera meaning nice slim close shots or do you want a hardcore serious camera for those clean crisp breath taking shots. The hardcore cameras are larger and more bulky than the party cameras which are slim and can fit in the pocket.

For the most part, the important things to consider when purchasing a camera is the megapixel, optical zoom, the LCD screen if you want, the battery type and the memory card type.

Megapixel means how many pixels it can put in a picture how much color or dots you'll get. The more megapixels, the more dots, thus the more clearer the image is, the more colorful, and the larger the image will be. Currently, for party cameras, they're up to 6.1 mega pixels. I have 5.1 mega pixel party camera and it suits me well. For the hardcore photographer, they're up to the 8.0 megapixels.

Optical zoom is the physical zoom that it can go without distorting the photo or making it blurry. Because once it goes into digital zoom, then the picture starts to pixelatte... or you can see the dots. For some cameras, they may have a 3x optical and 3x digital zoom.. that means you can phsically zoom up to the object 3 times the distance before i the digital zoom kicks in and starts to distort the image. What I mean by physical zoom or optical zoom is that the lenses in the camera are moving to create the zoom. Digital zoom is when the lenses aren't zooming and the camera is stimulating a zoom via the software that's in the camera. For a party camera, 3x optical is fine. for a hardcore picture taker, you'll need more like 10x optical.

LCD... it's basically up to you. My sony cybershot has a 2.5" LCD on the back. Party camera's usually have a bigger LCD screen than hardcore picture taker cameras... they usually have a 1.5" LCD screen.

Battery types... I suggest that you NOT get the ones that use the Double A (AA) or Triple A (AAA) batteries. Those can be a hassle... to always bring batteries. I suggest that you get a camera that uses the Lithium Ion battery and can be charged many times. I've had my cybershot for a year now and it still works fine and gives me about 2 hours of battery life.

Memory Cards... most digital cameras these days use memory cards. Sony brand cameras use theyr own brand of memory cards called Memory Stick Pro or Memory Stick Duo. My cybershot uses the duo. The majority of the Olympus and Kodak cameras use the xD memory card. Then there's the SD memory cards as well, which are a bit bigger and are made by sanDisk, in which some cameras use as well. What ever card type it uses, make sure to get a multi card reader on your computer that supports those types of cards. But then again, most camera's come with a transfer cable for you to be able to transfer files over quickly. usualy a USB cable.

Hope this helped.

Brand for one. Canon makes the best cameras under $300 while Sony makes the best fullsized, fixed lens cameras....the DSC-H5 ultrazoom and the DSC-R1.

For digital SLR cameras, Canon clearly dominates the market with the best cameras and best lenses. However, almost all SLR kit lenses (the lens that you buy with the body as part of a "kit") are of poor quality, causing the camera to perform less than what it should. Instead, you should buy an SLR as a body only and buy the lens seperately. A good all purpose, walking around lens is the Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM, which will run you around $360. It is well worth that price. If you aren't willing to buy the lens, you probably shouldn't even be considering an dSLR at all. A great top end alternative is Sony's DSC-R1. That camera takes professional quality pictures, is easier to use than an dSLR and is cheaper.

Use this website for testing of various cameras by a professional photographer and to get pretty much the best prices you will find for the cameras. Also, you will need to buy a memory card for your camera. Pricegrabber.com has the best prices for these.
