He has never done anything on the potty even if he sits there for a long time while watching tv etc...he says he's scared to 'go' on it and it's as though he won't release himself unless he's covered...what do I do? It seems like we've tried everything.

My son had this problem as well. I don't know if he likes ELMO or not but there a Potty me Elmo. You give Elmo something to drink and then a few minutes later he says he has to go potty so you put him on the potty that comes with him and he tinkles and sings a song or sometimes he says he doesn't have to go and will try again later. Anyway, make your son take elmo to the potty when Elmo says he has to go and soon your son will want to go potty like Elmo does!

Don't just make him sit on the potty. When he is ready he will let you know. You don't want him to be scared of it or think it is only a chair. Keep asking him if he has to go. Do that like every hour and eventually he will say yes, then let him sit there for a bit and say good try we can try later. and go from there. My son was hard to teach too, but then my daughter I put her in regular underwear and that was it she never looked back. They say girls are easier then boys. But just let him do it at his own pace. Your just making it harder for the both of you. Well good luck and it won't be long till he wants his drivers permit :)

Be happy that your child is at least attempting to go potty.

This is a very good sign.

How old is your child?

Maybe have him go potty with out the distractions around. If he says that he is scared tell him that you are there and nothing will happen. Tell him if he goes potty he will have a treat/snack.

Have him watch Daddy go potty (or yourself) so he knows that it's ok to use the potty.

Place a warm wash cloth over his pee pee. Don't let him watch tv in the pottie room. Keep trying my son is two and a half and pretty much potty trained still in pull ups but he will hold it all night and go first thing in the morning. Good Luck

Did you try putting a towel over his legs while hes sitting there?

Also, try letting him in the bathroom with you and your husband while you're going potty. Kids learn from watching. If he's never seen either of you tinkle then how would he know what he's doing? Its a perfectly natural thing for small children to have to be in the room with you while you're going. I learned that way at 18 months.

You've probably already tried what I'm about to suggest but I'll do my best to help. If he's scared to "go", then give him a book with alot of pictures to distract him from his fear. Because if he's watching tv, he can't think about the picture, because it's moving too fast. But a picture book, he can turn the pages when he wants.

Just wait until he is ready. If he is scared now, he will get over it. Dont feel the pressure from everyone saying you have to hurry and do everything as soon as possible. There is time and you dont have to push him. When he is ready, he will go. Until then just approach the subject if he is scared, say ok and leave it alone.
