Your doc will monitor your Blood Urea Nitrogen and creatinine for the procedure because they are an indicator kidney function (how well are your kidneys eliminating waste). For the urography, a dye will be injected into you and they will visualize your kidneys and lower urinary tract under xray. The dye is iodine based and is eliminated by the kidneys. If your kidneys are not filtering out the dye properly, the dye is toxic to your kidneys and may cause permanent damage. That is why after the procedure they will either give you extra fluid intravenously or tell you to make sure you drink a lot of fluids. If they know you have reduced kidney function, they will either not do the procedure or will give you medication called N-acetylcysteine days before to help protect your kidneys.

If it is high, it shows that kidney function is not good . The kidney would not be able to excrete adequately the dye used for IVU.
