When your growing watermelon what is the best way to tell when it's ready to pick?
I heard of "knocking" and to push in on both ends to check the softness.
What do you think?

It's a black diamond melon if that makes a difference.

you thump it to see if it sounds hollow
Look at the bottom to see it is whiteish on the ground side and look at the little "pigtail" beside the stem to see if it is brown

Knock on the melon - if you hear a hollow sound it is ready. Works most every time.
