I believe its just a fluke, does not mean anything. Just an accident of translation that 'God' is spelled the way it is.
I do not see there being a relationship between the two.

If pro is the opposite of con, then what's the opposite of progress?
That's an old one :"God is spelled dog backwards" I see it as God is the OPPOSITE of what society's definition of "dog".
