They must be installed correctly. What many people do is put them in a wall or roof cavity, and do not allow sufficant space around them, as they can get warm. Not warm enought to cause a fire, but warm enough.

They are not dangerous once you do not go fiddling with the connections.
Also make sure that they are not covered by insulation as they can overheat and burn out.
If connecting them make sure you connect the correct side to the mains.This is normally the thinner wire as the thicker wire is for the low voltage side which carries a much higher current so needs to be thicker.

No more so than any other. However, if they were dangerous, then it would be illegal for them to be on sale, so they should be perfectly safe if used in the manner intended by the manufacturer.
