People started tipping years ago to get better service than the people who did not tip. It was like a bribe to make sure you got good service. Today all the lazy people expect you to tip regardless of how little they do for you.As for you driving a truck and not getting tips , I can only guess some day you will run across a moron who will tip you since some people insist on tipping everyone. I own a brick laying business and yes I have been bribed by home owners who think if they buy my guys lunch they will get a better built house.I have been tipped in many non traditional tip jobs.Like I said some people are eager to bribe you to do a better job. However in my case it does not work since I always strive for perfection in everything I do.

Oh yea last time I checked here in America no one has ever been forced to take a job waiting tables or any other job that requires them to receive tips to make a living.Yes they are all doing those jobs of their own free will. No one twisted their arms and said please wait tables for minimum wage. Yes they get minimum wage. Some people here do not seem to know the minimum wage varies from job to job, different industries have different rules for wages and overtime pay and unemployment. How little some people know yet still open their mouths to spew so many uninformed opinions on something they know so little about.

First of all food servers, bellhops, and people who park your car at hotels work for practically nothing, about $2.00 or $2.50 per hour. If they were to get a decent wage then the price at the restaurant, hotel, etc would go up to meet the difference. With that service would go down, as these service people would get paid the same if they did an excellent job or just a mediocre one. There would be no more running to get your car for you and with many people waiting at the same time for their car it would take a long time and most people would not like that. Food service would also be slow and not as friendly. There would be no going out of the way to make the dining experience as pleasant as they can for you. It is hard work when you do a good job and you would not be any better off if you paid higher prices instead of tips and some would be worse off as servers in most places would not work for a measly 10 to 15 percent increase. When you work for tips you do all you can to please the customer so you may receive that little extra for your pocket.

I guess you have never worked in a restaurant and had to put up with that crap! Service related industries only make one half of mininum wage as their hourly rate. They dont get benefits or any of the things that salary and hourly wage earners get. Besides, if you had to be nice to every truck driver that ran you back and forth for 12 cokes in a half hour and managed to try to look down your shirt each time, perhaps you might expect 5 bucks. Dont be hard on them, tip them nicely. Karma comes back to you when you do nice things like this. Are you really gonna miss five bucks in the long run? Remember that what goes around, comes around- stack the deck in your favor. In the meantime, remember if it was your kid working 8-10 hours on their feet like a chicken with their head cut off to pay for college, wouldnt you want their customers to tip them?

Who does and doesn't get tips is totally arbitrary. Some jobs, as others have pointed out, don't pay, in expectation that tips will make up the difference.

Yours is not one of those jobs.

I'd prefer we get rid of tipping entirely, and employers pay their employees, and pass the cost on to their customers.

Wouldn't it be nice to see the actual cost of a meal, right there on the menu, rather than seeing only the without-tip cost?

People like for instance waiters work for a low wage of sometimes 2 dollars and some change an hour...they rely on tips to make up the difference. People who work for a standard wage should not expect tips....but some people are generous and give them anyway.

Tip workers are generally paid less than minimum wage. Tips make up half of their hourly pay and is taxed like regular income.

try getting paid 3.25 an hour, and see if you don't beg for tips. Some deserve them others don't. Waitresses are the least paid in any profession. But if it weren't for them, who would wait on you?

I agree. I don't get a tip when I work out somebody's software problem, or replace a circuit borad.

Are we supposed to stop traffic to go knock on your windshield and hand you 5 bucks for not causing an accident? Come on!
