I love tamales and I am on the search for the best ones in different cities. I am visiting Santa Fe and it is a tamale fest over here! Here's your chance to weigh in with your favorites.
If possible, please list
1. The kind of tamale (green chili chicken),
2. The name of the restaurant (Tesuque Village Market),
3. The city (Santa Fe),
4. And the price per tamale/plate ($4.99 per tamale...ouch!).
If you have other comments about quality, variety, atmosphere, etc. feel free to mention them!
(The masa was very moist and the filling a little hot. They come unwrapped--which was a little disappointing because half the fun of tamales is unwrapping the husk yourself. They are usually pretty busy at Tesuque, serving tourists, the Santa Fe Opera crowd, and their local reservation. They also have a bakery and small food store.)

I came back from my Mexico/Guatemala cuisine tour (April/May '06) in which I applied to culinary school in Cuernavaca, Mexico. They didn't like this yankee (me), thus my return to business/accounting... So here goes, get the "Oaxacan style" Mexican tamale. It is moist and thin, not dry like most that you find in the Southwest (as far as I know). Guatemalan style tamales are the same as Oaxacan, but fatter/thicker. The Oaxacan style have a mild red chile sauce/salsa, with olives and other condiments and they are sometimes served with cream on top. A total "party" in your mouth! They blow away all those dry, basic ones that they mostly sell here in the states. I just don't know where you can find them where you are traversing. Just ask for Oaxacan or Guatemalan style tamales or go to a Guatemalan restaurant. They are different, but worth the effort to find and taste. Buen apetito y provecho!

If you've never had Brazilian style tamales you are in for a tasty surprise. I grew up in Brazil and I can tell you that Brazilian tamales, or "pamonhas" (pah-mon-in-as) as they call it, are one of the best I have ever tasted. If not "the best." (forgive me my fellow tamale lovers! *smiles*)
In Brazil they have several versions of the pamonha and each one is more delicious than the other. Some are stuffed with cheese and sausage, others are sweet and delicious! Just talking about it makes my mouth water.
I don't know exactly where you could find tamales in your city but you sure could find some if you went to Miami, FL. There are so many restaurants there that serve authentic Brazilian food that you are bound to find some of these delicacies to sample from.
Good luck and happy eating!

I think tamales look and smell delicious, but I can't stand them. I don't like the masa....which is what makes them tamales. I know lots of people that do love them though, and many of them will only buy from street vendors. It seems the homemade ones are the best.

The best tamale is from the original Casa Molina in Tucson.... and now La Casita de Molina in Tucson as well. The beef and green corn tamales are the best. When green corn is in season they are so heavenly and really womderful with a side of chile con carne. MMmmmmmmm.. Now I'm hungry. I once made them with my aunt with corn just picked off of the stalks. That was so good.

The best tamale that I've ever had was actually from the Seaside Buffet inside the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas! I wouldn't suggest that you go there just for the tamale, though...the buffet is $14.99 for lunch...

honestly, saying "tamale" is like saying "pie" here in Latin America... so with that being said, there are different kinds of tamales in every street corner, with different recipes depending on province, region, country, etc.... some are made with different kinds of corn, different types of grains, wrapped in various types of leafs/husks, different fillings... the best are always made by some poor grandmother and her daughters in some shack on the outskirts of the city
found a video where they are wrapping tamales made in panama, they are using two kinds of leafs "hijao" (sp?) and plantain leaf
