Saint (Masculine) The feminine word is Santa. as in Santa Rosa.
In most cases, cities in California with names like San Mateo or San Diego are named for the origianal Spanish missions that were founded during the original exploration of California.
In most cases, the name has been shortened (The full name of San Diego's mission is Mission San Diego de Alcala. The full name of Ventura's mission is Mission San Buenaventura).

It means Saint. The complete word should be Santo, but when you put it before the name you just say San and then the name.

For example: Saint Matthew you will say San Mateo but if you will say something about a non-specific Saint you should say El Santo (The Saint)
