The temp going up and down would make me think either bad sending unit, or thermostat is sticking. Rubber burning smell, I don't know. Are you sure the water pump is turning? If it is trying to lock up, the belt could be slipping on the pulley. This would cause that type of smell. Or maybe the belts are just loose.

it sounds like you have a crapped out water pump almost. dont know though, I am not looking at the car but that is what sounds like. Also could be the thermostat is stuck. If i were to bet though i would say it is the pump.

if it smells like rubber is burning, it could be that your waterpump is locked up and the burning smell is your alternator makeing the belt turn while the waterpump is holding it back.....

IF YOUR CAR HAS ELEC FAN TO COOL MOTOR, MAKE SURE YOUR FAN IS KICKING IN WHEN MOTOR IS WARM,TO COOL MOTOR,,,IF DONT HAVE ELEC FAN, AND YOU HAVE CLUTCH FAN ,CHECK THERMOSTAT,TO MAKE SURE ITS OPENING AND CLOSING PROPERLY TO ALLOW CIRCULATION OF WATER OR ANTIFREEZE TO COOL MOTOR,...TO DO THIS CHECK, YOU CAN CAREFULLY FEEL FOR HEAT ON THE TOP OF RADIATOR ,AND TOP HOSE TO SEE IF CIRCULATING.THE SMELL YOUR GETTING IS OF COURSE THE HEATING OF THE RUBBER AND OTHER MOTOR PARTS,WHICH IS NOT GOOD .CORRECT THIS PROBLEM SOON..
