Where did the term "Sick 'em!" come from?

It's a term used when someone wants their dog to attack someone.

As in "sic 'em" said to encourage a dog to chase and bite: arose as a quick pronunciation of "seek".

"Sic", also "sick", is a dialectal variant of "seek".
