Ok folks, I never done that before and thought that saying it was my teen would be better...Actually, it's our live-in nanny from overseas that cares for our 19 month old girl. She sleeps during the day while she shopud be working, does n't eat meal with us (only in her room), and complained the other day that she gets tired in the afternoon (am i suposed to let her off?). We hired her because I was 7 months pregnat at the time (due at any moment now) and needed someone to help. My toddler doesn't like her much, which is weird since she goes with everyone. Anbd latelly I found out she has been visiting travel and visas websites and I'm afraid she may just disapear from here. That's why i would like to hear what she says on her phone calls, to be prepared and safe if she is planning to just dump us or something else...Any ideas?

Get one of these kits:

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?parentPage=search&cp=&productId=2149814&origkw=wireless+camera&kw=wireless+camera&tab=support

This IS a camera kit but they also have built-in microphones (per the owner's manual). The famous X10 cameras do as well but the receivers sent with the camera kits DO NOT have an audio output. If you contact X10 you can get a simple camera with microphone and might be able to get them to "upgrade" the receiver to one with audio out. You'd then use the receiver on a TV with audio input to listen.

Other suggestions include a wireless camera and microphone such as this:

Since this is an eBay auction this link WILL vanish at some point. But for about $40 you can get a video and audio system. Simply do not use the camera. Since you will be putting this in a bedroom, put tape over the camer lens so that there is no possibility someone with a similar system accidentally stumbling on your transmitter and viewing your daughter.

Do realize any baby monitor or similar device can be received by others. Since electronics is both my living and hobby, I have receivers and devices like this myself. Many times I can stumble across signals such as this device produces. The so called Nanny Cams hidden in clock radios and fire detectors are all over and broadcast in the clear. Baby monitors, cordless phones, and such can easily be picked up using a scanner. Any programmable scanner from the early days of the Bearcat 210XLR and up to today can receive these frequencies. Be forwarned that your neighbors can listen as well.

As far as invasion of privacy is concerned.... She is a minor living in YOUR house. She has no privacy. I've known of parents with problem children to take the door off their room. Changing clothes took place in the bathroom. All other activity did not require a door. If she is over 18, then there could be issues. Should she find out you are listening it could be a problem. As others have stated I'm interested in what you suspect. If you are just being a nosy dad/mom, shame on you.

I think you ought to go and find a new nanny. Her sleeping durning the day puts your child in danger. She should go see a doctor about that - if not then chalk it up to her being lazy and get rid of her.

If she's a live in and one of the things that is expected is that she eats with the family (most of the time) then that too can be a reason she's let go - listed under doesn't fulfill expectations.

Her looking at the websites is something you will have to ask her. If she refuses to talk to you about it, then she's a flight risk and I'd be worried that she'd just up and leave your child (hopefully with you, but who knows?) and not turn back.

If you found her through an agency, call the agency to find out how you should handle her dismissal. If you didn't, then I don't know - but treat it like you would any other business employee dismissal.

best wishes.

It sounds like you have a trust issue with your teen. This is understandable given all the things that teens get into these days. If you don't want to get in to expensive things, just go out and buy a micro cassette recorder- they have the ones that are activated buy voice only so it's not constantly recording when nothing is being said. You can purchase these at any local radio shack or even Wal-Mart. You would need to put it in there before she comes home from school and then remove it once she leaves for school again. Good luck to you.

My teen girls are 14 and 16 and both have Myspace and facebook I have them both on my friends with my account. I can not see every thing like their messages but I can see pics and on facebook I can see what is wrote on their wall. I don't check too often because I want to trust them and I do. It's the people I don't know that I have trust issues with i.e. their friends and contacts. But for the most part I do care what they post and other activity they may have on there. But I care more about what they do with their physical lives. It's easier to get in trouble in real life than on the internet. But there are some parents that do not care.

I'm a teen, and thats by far the WORST thing you can do, she will be mad at you for the rest of her life! If my mom or dad did something like that, I'd NEVER talk to them again, Give her privacy. That's what we need.

IS IT THAT YOU DON'T TRUST YOUR TEEN? IF SHE FINDS OUT ABOUT IT, SHE WILL DEFINITELY NOT TRUST YOU ANYMORE, AND THAT WILL GIVE HER MORE OF A REASON TO SHY AWAY FROM YOU AND HIDE THINGS FROM YOU.

WHY NOT TRY TO HAVE AN OPEN RELATIONSHIP WITH HER SO SHE CAN FEEL FREE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT ANY AND EVERYTHING. THAT WAY YOU WON'T HAVE TO SPY ON HER IN A SNEAKY WAY.

IF YOU'RE GOING TO GO THAT FAR, YOU MIGHT AS WELL HAVE YOUR HOME WIRED OR HIRE A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR TO FOLLOW HER AROUND.

If you're thinking about resorting to a listening device, you need to drastically improve communications between yourself and your son/daughter. Spying is not the answer. Ever.

If you get caught, your son/daughter will never trust you again. As long as you live...

Why would you want to do something like that? Thats an invasion of privacy! You should be ashamed of yourself! I can understand a parents want to understand what their child does that they don't tell them, but if she finds out, she will never forgive you unless its for a good reason like her boyfriend is beating her or something.

Are you kidding? A listening device is not the answer! You need to sit her down and talk to her and this time LISTEN to what she has to say. You use to be a teenager, and you know what to expect. Communication is the answer, not spying! If you do this you will regret it.
