Ask for a written list of:
Veterinarian's name and phone #
Any allergies the dog has
Medications dog is taking (if so, when and how much, in food or down throat)
Favorite games
Any commands/cues the dog knows
Where does the dog sleep and can it be left alone in house or should be crated.
Have the owner give you enough of dog's own food for the weekend plus 1 extra meal - keeping on it's own diet will prevent stress diarrhea
Get some of the dog's own toys
If this is the first time with you, ask owner for a T-shirt that smells like the owner for the dog to sleep with.
And make sure dog has collar with tags and a leash to use
Have Fun!

Yes, the basics for certain. However, be very careful with the dog. A friend was dog sitting, and the the dog was stolen from the yard.
Additionally, on some of the Judge shows, people sue when their pets are injured, lost, or stolen, while in the care of others.

Well it depends. You should find out what the dog likes, how he/she reacts to you, if the dog is especially affectionate or if it likes to be rough, to run, to go for walks, run free, if it likes to sleep with a person or whatever. Try to find out how the dog is already trained.

Treat the animal as if it were a small child. Most animals have an intelligence of that equivalent. Play with it, interact with it, just 'hang out' with it. However you would kindly treat a child, do so with the animal. You'll be surprised how good it makes you feel! :^)
