I'm getting ready to head to college, and I'd like to find an affordable digital camera, but one that has good quality. My preference would be one that has film-quality. It's just for candid shots.... birthdays and the like, but I would like to be able to print them without the photos looking overly-flashed or pixelized/grainy. What kind of camera should I look for? what brands stick out as far as quality? If you could answer my questions it would be much appreciated.

I don't know the best ones, but I can tell you where to get them for cheap.Go to ubid.com or ebay. But ubid is a good site to bid on new and refurbished products.

In the price range you are probably after (under $300), Canon makes the best cameras (they are far better than everyone else at this level).

I'd recommend you budget in at least $250 for a camera + memory card (cameras need memory cards). The camera to have is the Canon Powershot A540:

The quality of the pictures is amazing for such a cheap camera. You should buy a Secure Digital Memory card for this camera. Get at least 256 meg or better yet, half a gig. The best prices are at Pricegrabber.com The cost is pretty trivial if you know where to shop (which isn't at the local store, lol).

I bought a Concord 5063 AF 5 mega-pix for something under a $100 on sale. I think it was at Circuit City. You can check their website for more info. I've had mine for a while and I like it. The only complaint I have is the battery cover likes to come off some times if I'm not careful. Actually I solved that problem by folding up some tin foil and placing it under the lid to give it a snugger fit.

I have Sony cybershot digital camera and I have been very happy. I have over 7 million megapixels because I might do some photo enlargements. I bought around 5 million megapixels for my daughter and my parents, she really likes hers. Prizes are down, do not buy the cheep one because you will end up buying the better one soon.

I know it's not the best advice, but if you are looking for cheap-affordable, good quality--go to Wal-Mart and check out their cameras. Ask a sales associate what they recommend for your budget.

Though you can get a cheap HP, don't. I have had two $100 ones and they both broke. Whatever you do, don't go HP.
