Vets do not have appropriate education in small animal nutrition. Most have no credit courses in cat nutrition, just "seminars" put on by the commercial food producers.

I would be willing to risk my next month's income checks that when you read the ingredient list on this food two of the first three ingredients on the bag will be some sort of corn. Corn is used to fatten slaughter animals. Most of these animals have a life-span of under two years.

This is not a biologically appropriate food for a cat. The corn gives energy and has no nutrient value. You must educate yourself on this and get foods that don't have corn. CA Natural is chicken and rice, Natural Balance has a venison and pea. They also have a duck with something other than corn. I haven't really looked at that label yet.

This kind of switch will help bring your cat's weight down gradually over a period of a year. And she will be getting a much healthier food.

A raw meat diet (with appropriate supplements) will trim the cat down in six months to look as trim and muscular as the wild cats you see on TV and in the zoo.

Yes your cat is overweight. This is the most common cause of diabetes in cats. You need to start feeding it twice a day instead of leaving food down all day. Most cats don't over eat but a percentage of them do and need to be monitored. You have about a 40% if not more chance of your cat developing diabetes. It is not easy to regulate blood sugar in a cat. It requires getting a urine sample daily and figuring out how much insulin to give. It's much easier to prevent, than to treat.

No she is not overweight! My cat is 2 weighs around that area and is pure black and spayed but we took her to the vet and they said that she is not overweight but she might be a little unhealthy being because she doesn't get any excersise....we make the dog chase her around the house to get exercise lol just kidding!!!!

It's best to check with your vet as it depends on the breed and the bone size and other factors.

I have two large cats, one is 11lb and he's overweight the other 9lb and he's fine. Her stomach shouldn't hang and you should be able to feel her ribs, they should have a small amount of padding.

Never put a cat on a diet without veterinary supervision, it can lead to hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver syndrome) and other serious problems.

if you think she needs to exercise, go and get a lazer pointer, I have 2 indoor cats and because they are indoors all the time, and loose interest in their toys and other things I got a lazer pointer and all you do is point it on the floor and move it about and they will chase it, this will make them run, jump, and get exercise, in the mean time they LOVE IT!!!! it is the best toy i ever bought for them! Give it a try!

if she looks too fat, and doesn't get much exercise then yes she is overweight. If you feed her twice a day, try chopping it down to once a day. She probably needs to get alot more play time and running around in, remember that she's like a toddler, you need to encourage that kind of activity.

I'm not sure how much cats are supposed to weigh but i would ask your vet. It just may be that kind of cat. For ex. my cat is not fat but she has a saggy belly. It was from surgery i think. That's how it was when we got her.

Take her to the vet. She could be healthily overweight, or she could need to be put on a diet, but the only way to know is a quick vet visit.

Try giving smaller meals or mix her food with dry cat food. She is likely to be more active if she carries less weight
