adding more memory is really the best way to do it. 256 is incredibly low right now with 1 gig being about the minimum for desktops and 512 the min for laptops. otherwiase, you can defrag yor harddrive, and eliminate programs you no longer use or dont need. also, upgrading yor cpu/gpu would help. if you run off of integrated graphics you are dumping a huge amount of work on your cpu that it can do without by adding a dedicated GPU(video card). also adding a sound card witha dedicated processor and not a piggyback proccesor if you run off of integrated sound would also help.

You could defrag your hard disk. And stop some unnessary programs and services from automatically starting at boot - but this won't make it run all that much faster (you may not even notice the improvement) - RAM, then CPU - that's what will make you faster.

Besides adding RAM you could upgrade your Hard drive, video card, cd rom or may be even the processor or keep it spyware, adware, virus free. also defragment the hard drives once every month and refresh the windows after 6 months. Also keep a system tweaker software.

find someone that knows about networking i had 256 mg of ram now i have 1GB without buying any memory u just have to know how to install virtual memory

defrag and uninstall the unused programs. increase the page file and keep purging. if you dont go online then uninstall antivirus
