For a first car, you need something cheap, but in good mechanical shape. Then you can learn the tricks of simple maintenance to keep it up. There are a lot of really bad cheap cars out there, so before you buy the car, take it to a mechanic you trust to have it checked out. If the seller won't let you do it, than it's most likely a bad car. Go cheap at first, and work your way up.

whatever you can afford...if you are financing because you have a job right now, just keep in mind that when you're young, jobs come and go. Don't get stuck with a high car payment that you can no longer afford. I fthey have to reposses the car you will screw up your finances for a long time to come. It's better to save as much cash as you possibly can and buy a cheap car. You won't get the ride of your dreams, but you'll have transportation.

Try a cheap car untill you learn to drive very well cause if you scratch or crash this car is better than crashing a expensive one. Just for the first year than change it!

well i got my pt cruiser (2001, but at the time it was just 3 years old) used with just 20,000 miles in it for 5,000 dollars. you can get slightly used cars for a great price.
oh, and that included the car not being wrecked and had one other owner before me.
youll get good prices if you do your homework and check used.

For that amount of money, you can buy a small, new car. You can find used cars, in good shape, for far less. Read the Lemonade books. There is one for used and one for new cars.

you should try something for about $5,000 or around that, becuase you are likely to crash your first car.
