It is due to neither zinc or calcium deficiency. This is a myth!

It could be due to damage to the nail from trauma... injuring a finger or a rough manicure.

It could also be do to a bacteria or a fungus.

They are not due to a lack of calcium Sometimes they are related to minor trauma to the nails (often not even noticed) but in any event they are harmless and do not indicate a serious illness.

NO because I drink a lot of milk and eat tons of dairy products. It could be damage after taking polish off, buffing and all that. I only have one white spot on one nail.

No, it just means that you knocked the nail bed and ever so slightly damaged the nail. If you have weak nails genetically, then it'll happen a lot. If you inherited strong nails, then it won't happen so often.

I've always heard that it just means you bumped the nail bed into something...
Am an RN, took all the nutrition classes, but I don't recall ever learning it had anything to do with nutrition.

as two of the posters said, it is from the nails being hit..... i have all sorts of white spots on my nails! so no worries :)

It means that there was stress on the nail - bent or pressured.
