Do you have it in writing from the finance company that your debt as been absolved? If not, you may be in trouble.

No. However they can sell the unpaid debt to unscrupulous debt-collection agencies who try to con you or pressure you into paying them the remaining money. Those new agencies should be ignored . If you acknowledge them or argue with them that is like starting a new debt and they can then make a "legit" claim to more money.
