The real cause is power and greed. Bush is just a puppet on a string...and a stupid puppet at that.

I think they all play into the war. I really believe Bush thinks he's on a mission from God to rid the world of "evildoers". Of course I don't believe there are ANY valid reasons for war except for self defense. The war in Iraq was pre-emptive and there were/are several other countries who could legitimately pose more of a threat than Iraq ever did. Financial interests most certainly come into play. You're talking about OIL and that always involves huge amounts of $$$$. So you were right in your assessment, just toss religion in as well.

Real cause: neoconservative PNAC plan ('actively create democracies to stabilize Middle East') implemented in Iraq by leveraging 9/11 & WMDs as the red herrings. Implementation by small group of people, ignoring input from others. Misplanned and misguided w/ an isolationist approach (disregard allies/international support), lack of understanding of the dynamics of the region (theocratic mindsets there) and how democracy flourishes over time. Result is war on terror and efforts in Afghanistan are severely compromised (diluted resources, post-9/11 international support and unity with U.S. fractured, more extremism in the region is the result). Bush has changed his isolationist policy and shows other signs that he realizes his implementation of the PNAC plan completely backfired and has given us a more volatile world. Best thing to have done: forget the PNAC plan, concentrate on Afghanistan and the war on terror. Additional notes: (A) PNAC plan motivated by two things: value of the region b/c of oil; far-reaching threat if the religious fanatics in the region ever got hold of nukes. (B) PNAC plan's supporters find a synchronicity w/ Israeli foreign-policy. (C) Expanding on (B), some PNAC'ers think there's literally divine/biblical support for PNAC -- and they link it w/ Israel, etc. (whether Bush believes this or not is uncertain; he has heard sermons on this). All of this combines to form an ideology that became almost dogmatic and unopen to questioning by the PNAC'ers. Dangerous stuff - not evil people but very misguided.

Regardless of the secret motivations of the administration, religion is being used to sell this war, and promote support for it. Go to any political message board and you'll see that a huge amount of the support for this war comes from religious motivations, not political, security, or economic.

So religion can't wash its hands of involvement in this.
It has blood on its hands, like it or not.

The war is not about Religion, it is about the Bush agenda: money and power. When the history of this time is written, those of us who lived through it all will e ashamed we didn't do more to stop the Bush administration.

Religion divided cultures. East and west. If Muslims did not have religion, they would not hate us. If there had been no crusades, we would be better. If there was no religion, we would be able to work together, and not be divided as much. Religion indirectly caused the war.

i think the us is looking for an excuse to go into iran - and they would just love for israel to do the dirty work for them. it's basically a war between iran and the states fought by israeli soldiers and hezbollah.
