Most people can't be bothered learning about beliefs outside their own. Then they are just informed by the popular media. Wiccans "are" WITCHES, and witches supposedly serve the Devil. Sure, you and I know this is nonsense, but that is the perception. Blame the Salem Witch Trials. Although that wasn't their fault, either. It had more to do with rye mold than Satanic worship! All you can do is smile at the poor, thought-less people and go about your business...

Part of it is because of the way Hollywood and storybooks have portrayed Witches. In the movie "The Craft" one of the Witches went totally crazy, causing the deaths of two people and eventually got put away in a mental hospital. In "Hansel and Gretel" the Witch lured children to her house by constructing it with candy and then tried to cook Hansel. These stereotypes are ground into peoples' brains from the minute they first hear that story.

Another reason would be the bible and Christianity. 75% of America is Christian, and Christianity preaches that Witchcraft is evil, and that Witches are worshiping Satan, whether they know it or not.

My advice to you: When someone calls you evil, or a Satan-worshiper, don't waste any more time on that person. Don't speak to them, don't listen, don't look, don't even think about them, because they don't matter. You know what you are, and you are not alone. Find some good Pagan friends and enjoy life the way the Goddess wants you to! Blessed be, sister.

All true Wiccans and witches are non violent and not evil. I am a witch and I know what you mean. It took me 2 years and the help of my open minded christian sisters to show her that I do not worship the devil. Christians seem to think that their evil entity crosses over the religion line onto other belief systems. Sorry they created him, they have him we don't.

The problem stems from ignorance and fear on their part. They are afraid to find out for themselves. Instead they listen to their religious leaders about it and they do not know either. Our elders or high preist(ess) do no such thing. Christians fail to realize that our practice of "An it harm none do what ye will" is something we actually live by and can adhere to. They however realizing that it is nearly impossible for them to follow all of thier commandments in the bible only see evil in that which is different. All we can do it try our best to educate in a way that they can understand (and it is very hard to open a mind who's door has been shut for far too long (hinges are rusty).

They try to change others while we go about our business, we are called to our belief, not forced into it. Christians are born into thier faith and about 80% stay because they feel they "have to " because of their family. My family did that to me. I had lost my christian faith when I was 14. I finally found my calling in my late 30's.

It will be this way until the are educated and enlightened in their teachings of "love thy neighbor as you would have them love you". Until then we must endure.

To be honest I don't know much about wiccans and certainly don't think all of them are evil. I think that wiccans are people who are not taught the values of a good Christian life. I think that if wiccans let themselves understand about Jesus and his plan of Salvation that they would find a better path to go through this world. I find there to be no evil in your question or no hate in the tone of your question so I have no reason to think you are evil. You are just young and have not been taught correct values. I don't mean that in a hateful way. I just mean that if you would allow yourself the time to think things through that I am sure you would place less value on wiccans and more value on Jesus and the life that He offers. Jesus loves you and would love for you to give Him a chance. He stands at the door of your heart knocking. Will you answer His knock and give Him just a chance. The wiccans will always take you back.

First let me say that I'm astonished at the ignorance being shown here! Look outside your box! Find out about something before you spew opinions that are not your own!

Witchcraft is just that...a craft. Art if you will. Witch literally means someone who works with magic. There are many, many different types of witches in the world. The word "witch" and the word "pagan" were at their inception slurs. Witchcraft in all its many glorious forms has been around for eons.

Wicca is a fairly modern religion created in the mid-1900's by a man named Gerald Gardner. Wiccans do not practice black magic. They follow one basic law "Harm none". That's actually pretty hard to follow. See the Christians say..."do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Well, I smoke, don't eat right, don't sleep right, think not-kind thoughts about myself, etc.....so if I treat you like I treat myself I'm not doing you any favors! But to harm none......whew...that's tough. Wiccans believe in "heavenly parents" , so to speak, as they see divinity manifesting as both God and Goddess. It is a religion that empowers women as well as men. They follow the seasons, have 8 major holidays a year as well as celebrating the full moons (known as Esbats). Many wiccans do practice forms of magic, however it too is bound by the law known as "The Wiccan Rede....harm none. They often are into astrology, divination, herbology and much more. However, I can find no reason to call these peaceful people...evil.

They do not believe in the devil, nor do they worship him. They rejoice in good and many of them ascribe to the theory of karma believing that what they do will come back to them (many of them believe that it will come back 3 times over....so they are a careful people.) Evil? No....they are a bit too fluffy for my tastes.

Not all wiccans are witches, and not all witches are wiccan!

If you want to know more there are thousands of books at any Barnes and Noble on Wicca and there are even more websites dedicated to it.

(If they are secretive it is due to the intolerance they recieve and because matters of spirit cannot easily be transferred with words)

cartman,
We are all evil according to the Bible.
Wicca:
1. A polytheistic Neo-Pagan nature religion inspired by various pre-Christian western European beliefs, whose central deity is a mother goddess and which includes the use of herbal magic and benign witchcraft.
2. A group or community of believers or followers of this religion.

This is errant to the way of God.

So Christians will jump to that conclusion, that Wiccans are evil, because most of them talk that way, but in actuality they are evil too.

What Jesus did is provide a way out of the evil. The nature of humans; to stray away from the ways of God, is countered in those that are saved, but the nature of evil is still in us.

So we are saved evil people who trust God, a counter to that which is evil. A Christian is a saved evil person, in essence.

What God promised is that the evil part is paid for, and removed when we get up there to Him. That's why Christians are the Children of God, not the Children of Disobedience. We are sealed, sanctified in Jesus name.

Wiccans practice something that is counter to all of that. They are led astray by whatever it is that they value by their faith, while their faith is based on something other than, " Thus saith the word of the Lord."

So I don't know why others think that Wiccans are evil, but Christians have the word of God that shows them the right way, and Wicca is not included in that right way.

I think the problem is that most people do not understand what Wicca is, and they jump to the conclusion that it is the same as witchcraft.

As well, there may be different ideas even among Wiccans as to what "official" Wiccan beliefs and practices are.

Religious Tolerance.org has a good article --link pasted below.

Who thinks Wiccans are evil - some christian fundamentalists? Who cares? This religious stuff can be very alluring because it entices our egos; it allows us to be special, to be in special groups, etc. Forget the specialness, forget whether some people think Wiccans are evil, don't think that Wicca or Christianity or anything else is cool or special or different and just be ordinary.

Wiccans are generally perceived as practitioners of black magic. This may or may not be the case, but the secretive practices mean that people don't have a lot of knowledge about Wiccans and are afraid of them.

2006-08-12 04:19:18 · answer #9 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

NO Wiccans are evil. They don't even believe in "evil" so they can't logically worship it.

The concept that they are evil or "devil worshippers" dates back centuries to a very organized smear campaign from the Catholic Church. The branded all pagan religions to be "devil worship" and sought to kill them.

Heck, at the height of the hysteria, christians even had a manual published for how to find and kill witches:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malleus_Maleficarum

But like I said, it was nothing more than a smear campaign and a tool to convert the masses to christianity under the threat of death.

**************

Oh, and theat smear campaign based on lies persists to this day.

See "Tom" below for an example of an uninformed christian who is parrotting the lie from centuries ago.
