My cat catches them and brings them in at night. It's funny as hell to watch him play with them, I was just wondering what they are called?

I believe you are talking about Cicada's. They have a fluorescent green body and sing all the time. I had a cat bring one in the house in her mouth and SHE was singing....lol.

If I remember my schooling correctly the live under the earth for several years, then the come out of the pupa stage and fly around and sing for a week or so. You can look it up in dogpile.

You're probably referring to cicadas. My cats like to chase assorted bugs too!

Locusts and Katydids! Katydids (if I'm spelling it right) look like leaves, that's where the majority of the sounds are coming from, but some are locusts!

They are probably kay-de-dids. (Unsure of proper spelling, this is how you say it.) They are huge beetle-like bugs that come out in late summer. They make a hissing sound with their wings to attract a mate. Sometimes they just shed their outer shells then die.
