It can be. It didn't used to be but I have several Muslim friends that feel they have been harassed because of this, only after 9/11. Mostly they feel they are harassed at work. If your mom doesn't work outside the home she won't have any problems. The usual reaction from Americans toward Muslim women that cover themselves is pity, thinking they are oppressed. Yet many Americans do not respond to scantly-clad women with the same pity, as they probably should, for being used and objectified by our culture. A comfortable place in the middle where women are whole people and not a bodies or things that must be either displayed or hidden would be nice.

Well, it would be no problem with me, I don't judge people by what they wear, it's what's in their heart that counts. I think many Americans feel the same way, but, like anywhere, there are a lot of judgemental people out there. Especially with everything that's been going on with the war and terrorism, people are so suspicious of anyone who is different. It's too bad it has to be that way. Good luck, and keep in mind most people in this country I believe are good.

There should be no problem and nothing to be embarrased by. Here in USA there is all diffrent kinds of people and cultures here. No matter what has happened in the past here people are still very open to all diffrent kinds of cultures and people. You might get some stares only from the stupid uneducated people though. I hope you guys enjoy the states.

If her face is uncovered, that's not a problem in cities. There are lots of Muslim women in the cities with their hair covered.

In most places, especially larger urban areas you should have no problems at all. Lots of people wear scarfs and you even see a fully covered women now and then. Just use common sense and your mom should feel right at home. If you are going to smaller towns in middle America you might get some looks. Welcome to the United States.

You may come across a few ignorant americans that may try to give you a hard time but for the most part you should have no problem. I am sure that you are probably visiting one of the bigger US cities and people are usually more understanding and accepting of different cultures there.

No it really doesn't matter what you wear here, feel free to dress as your culture dictates. I must warn you that airport security is tight and they may be a lil more suspicious of you just because you are Muslim. I know it isn't right but people over here have become a bit ridiculous since the attacks on 9/11/01. And while most people will be nice some people will be disrespectful and might say mean things to you, ignore them, they are ignorant idiots. Overall have a good trip and welcome to America.

Most urban centers have Muslim communities and you should be fine. Americans are learning more about Islam everyday. Your mother will be treated with respect my the majority of people. Hair covering are not common in American fashion, but I imagine your mother already has a husband and is not looking for another? Good luck on your travels and safe journey. God be with you and your mother.

Not a problem here, She is free to be who she is and believe in what ever faith she wants! It may be a problem for some people but for the most, no problem, nothing should happen to her for being veiled.
