You are looking for what is known as an ultrazoom camera. I'm not aware of any models that currently come in 8 megapixels.
Sony currently makes the best ultrazoom camera at 7 megapixels, the DSC-H5:

If you want something a little more high end, might I suggest the Sony DSC-R1. This is currently the best fixed lens digital camera on the market:

However, you will need to buy the conversion lens adaptor and the telephoto lens for it. Ebay, actually has some good deals on this:

Other than that, you will need to go the digital SLR route. And that is VERY expensive. It's not the camera that costs but the lens. Expect to spend several thousand dollars for the type of lens that gives you 12x zoom equivalent. And let me tell you, I would not lay down that type of money for a lens for a low end 8 megapixel camera. The R1 is about as good as it gets for most people's budgets. But, probably, you just want the H5.

Try a Rebel. They seem really great, I think they have 8MP. I want one!
