Well, in my opinion he can still be a role model.
If following a role model can cause you to be 'saved' (whatever that might mean), then why not. And if Jesus is a 'saviour', then so is the Buddha and Gandhi.

Since Jesus is God, all those that he saved owe allegiance to God alone.
If someone other than God saved mankind, then mankind would rightly owe allegiance to someone who was not God, and whom the angels did not serve.
This would not have restored mankind to the level of dignity for which God originally created him, but would have been an inferior sort of redemption.
God doesn't go in for half measures.
This answer is based on the teachings of St. Anselm, a bishop and doctor of the Catholic Church, who was the most important theologian in history between St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas.

Jesus is God's only begotten Son. He was the first to be begotten as a spiritual son of God. God used his holy spirit, or active force, to beget Jesus as his spiritual Son, in order to bring him to heavenly glory. While alone with John the Baptizer, Jesus underwent total water immersion to symbolize the presentation of himself to God. Says Luke’s Gospel account: “When all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized and, as he was praying, the heaven was opened up and the holy spirit in bodily shape like a dove came down upon him, and a voice came out of heaven: ‘You are my Son, the beloved; I have approved you.’” (Luke 3:21, 22) John saw the holy spirit come upon Jesus and heard God speak in open approval of him as His beloved Son. At that time and by holy spirit, God begot Jesus as the first of the ‘many sons to be brought to glory.
Jesus became mankind's Saviour when he gave up his earthly life for us. He now sits at the right hand of his Father in heaven and is ruling as our King.

For GOD so loved the world, He what?
If Jesus was not God, Jesus out did the love of God Himself. Jesus would have loved all the people more than God does. NOBODY or NOTHING can out do God's love.
That's the problem with Islam's Allah. Allah died for nobody. they claim Jesus was just a prophet. IF Jesus was just a prophet, HE STILL OUT DID ALLAH, Because He died for Muslims as well as everyone.
JESUS CHRIST OUT DID ALLAH !!!!!!!
Yet, Islam says He was a mere prophet. hahahahaha
JESUS CHRIST DID THE VERY MOST LOVING "ACT" EVER OF MANKIND.
Jesus Christ by His own loving "acts".....
spanked and switched Allah and stood him with his nose in the corner in shame.
YIPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Go figure.

Jesus told them, "Don't let anyone mislead you. For many will come in my name, saying, `I am the Messiah.' They will lead many astray. And wars will break out near and far, but don't panic. Yes, these things must come, but the end won't follow immediately. The nations and kingdoms will proclaim war against each other, and there will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. But all this will be only the beginning of the horrors to come. Many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will lead many people astray. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. But those who endure to the end will be saved.

I think a lot of people would have a very hard time accepting Jesus of Nazareth the human being. They would then have to admit that he had the same faults, desires and inconsistencies that all human beings have. They would not be able to handle anything other than perfection from the 'divine'.

Mohamed, and Muslims today, considered Jesus a prophet, not a savior nor part of a trinity. And they thought Jesus was retroactively Muslim.
