Signs of infection (in any area) include warmth or heat at the site (you'll feel that the area is hot), pus or liquid coming out of the hole, low-grade fever. If none of these are present, you likely do not have an infection.
Small lumps around the holes are normal -- this is the skin having "walled" itself off around the wound. Cysts, typically, don't hurt -- if the pain is acute, it might be topical (strange, but true. The more topical the cut, the more it hurts). You might have scratched your ear with the end of the earing prong.
Have someone look it at and keep an eye on it. Chances are, it will be better in a day or two.

You might be sensative to the earrings. Having a lump is quite normal..I'm not sure what it is but I've had a lump in my earlobe around the hole, more than once through the years...it usually goes away itself. I wouldn't worry about it.. (unless it gets infected)

Could be an infection that just isn't close enough to the surface to discharge. Or, it could be a cyst pressing against a nerve. Either way, if it hurts that much it doesn't belong there and you should be seeking medical attention for it.

Well, sounds like you could easily have a pimple in there..
Get your mom or whoever you live with to look at it and investigate it for you.
Remember, the ears are close to the brain, any infection can and will travel if left alone.

I'd get it checked out because it could be a keloid that is inside the piercing or hypertrophic scarring.
