While I do not agree with the tenants of Islam, I have to ask... Hasn't that already been done?

I think that if you want to answer this question honestly, you must be unbiased in your criteria. The Christians will say how dare you put Buddah or Mohammad next to or higher than the "son of god". The Buddists will elevate Buddah because it is what they believe in. What i am saying is that you will elevate your beliefs higher than anyone elses.
With that being said I will say that many research has been done into this topic. Lists of the most influencial people in history can be found everywhere.
In a survey done by Michael Hart at http://www.dlmark.net/hundred.htm Muhammad is ranked #1
Also in this survey http://www.adherents.com/adh_influ.html Muhammad is ranked #1
It is intresting to note that the 2 sources I gave you are from people who are NOT Muslim. They took the unbias approach and came to the conclusion that Muhammad is the most influencial person in History. there are hundreds of surveys out there that support this and you can find them on the internet.

Talking about Islamic faith, Mohammad cannot be elevated to the level of Jesus Christ in Christian faith, because he is just a prophet and messenger of God, but niether God not the son of God. However, still talking about Islamic faith, Mohammad is the best prophet, and Jesus Christ is the second best. There is nothing in the Quran about Buddha but he could be a good cleric, or a prophet at its best state. Mohammad cannot be elevated to be like Jesus Christ in Christian faith because this contradicts with the main message of Islam, which is monotheism, worshiping and surrendering to God and only God.

Muhammad, Jesus, Buddha are all the Manifestations of the one true God in older times like the Bab and Baha'u'llah today. No men on earth are endowed with perfect love, knowledge and power like Them. All the Holy Books that They have revealed are the Words of God sent down to mankind from age to age.
God successively revealed His Words to raise men from lower to higher levels of spiritual progress.
The spiritual Teachings are the same in all those Holy Books; the social Teachings differ to suit each level of civilization.
All these religions are but one progressive Revelation of God to enable men to know God and to worship Him; and with this divine knowledge and prayerful attitude, men can build an ever-advancing civilization on earth.
All our knowledge and imaginations concerning the world civilization for this age are still too low and too narrow. We should turn to Baha'u'llah to learn about the real concept of divine civilization and to implement His Divne Plan for this purpose.
Baha'u'llah promise:
"The hour is approaching when ye will witness the power of the one true God triumphing over all created things and the signs of His sovereignty encompassing all creation."
Baha'u'llah, Gleanings from the Writings of Baha'u'llah, p. 72

depends who you think "we" is. If you are a christian or a Buddhist you might have your doubts.. more if you are a christian than a Buddhist, as Buddhists don't think this way.... But if you read the works of the teacher you speak of you can certainly decide for yourself the relative value of the works compared to what you are familiar with. They were all teachers and coming from a "spiritual place" so they each have value to someone, though it may not be you. You really have to do this one on your own and enjoy the learning experience along the way.

Nay, they say:"These (revelations of the Qur'ân which are inspired to Muhammad SAW) are mixed up false dreams! Nay, he has invented it! Nay, he is a poet! Let him then bring us an Ayâh (sign as a proof) like the ones (Prophets) that were sent before (with signs)!"
6. Not one of the towns (populations), of those which We destroyed, believed before them (though We sent them signs), will they then believe?
7. And We sent not before you (O Muhammad SAW) but men to whom We inspired, so ask the people of the Reminder [Scriptures - the Taurât (Torah), the Injeel (Gospel)] if you do not know.
8. And We did not create them (the Messengers, with) bodies that ate not food, nor were they immortals,
9. Then We fulfilled to them the promise, and We saved them and those whom We willed, but We destroyed Al-Musrifûn (i.e. extravagants in oppression, polytheism and in sin).
10. Indeed, We have sent down for you (O mankind) a Book, (the Qur'ân) in which there is Dhikrukum, (your Reminder or an honour for you i.e. honour for the one who follows the teaching of the Qur'ân and acts on its orders). Will you not then understand?

I don't think *we* have any say in this -- God already has! God chooses His Messengers; we only choose whether we will listen to them or not.
Update:
budaklolo -- or a Baha'i, as I am.
Jonathan -- there is no self-idolatry in Islam. That is why pictures are prohibited. I have discussed Islam with Muslims and they tell me that the Qur'an is more important than Muhammad -- where is the self-idolatry in that?

buddah is below Jesus because buddah was a caring man who was confused, Jesus was God, and muhammed was a man who didn't like all the rules of christianity and wanted to be worshipped secretly in his heart and poof here is a completely twisted version of christianity with alot of self idolatry
