I know all about sids (well all that they know and teach us) and suffocation with a pillow and stuff like that, and I also know that it is best for everyone to not use a pillow, but most people do. So does anyone know when it is as safe as it can be? (don't worry my sons are 1 1/2 and 3)

Though they're often sold with crib bedding sets, pillows are not recommended for children under 2 years of age, as children that small can easily suffocate while using one.

But if you want to give your child a pillow while he's still sleeping in a crib, give him a small one (the size of an airline pillow). However, it's best to wait until your child is moving from a crib to a bed before introducing a pillow.

Your child's first pillow should be firm. A feather pillow is not recommended because it's too soft and can smother a child if his head sinks into it while he's sleeping. Use your own judgment and give him a pillow when you're both ready.

My son will be 3 in a few weeks and we just started giving him a pillow to sleep with at the beginning of the summer. I definitely wouldn't allow the 1 1/2 year old to sleep with one yet.

Mine all started at 1 year old. Their Big heads are 1/3 of their total body and they need the support. BUT, the first few nights, check on them periodically to make sure they don't snuggle with the pillow that it covers their faces! I attached my childrens pillows with safety pins to the mattress sheets so they couldn't get under them. Good Luck!

well i'm going to sound like a horrible mom but my kids at about 6 months had a pillow not a regullar pillow you know fluffy ansd stuff but like a reall nice soft flat one that i used while pregnant . and no pillow case . it became easy fo rthem to stay sleeping becouse it had my smell. but i alwasy checked on them to make sure they are ok and once i was satisfied they where not going to sufocate or anything . i was able to have a restfull sleep . but i guess 1 yr old is a good age just use a flat pillow no pillow case for now untill youare sure they wont suffocate or anything.

My daugther is a little over 2 and she grabs a pillow her self and lays down on it. So i just let her. your kids are both old enough to hold up there heads and stuff like that so you don't have to worry about sids.

not before they're 2 yrs old...mostly because they don't need it...their shoulders are small enough that their necks don't crank like ours do...
