I used an IUD between all 4 of my pregnancies and was delighted with them. You don't know it's there, it doesn't mess with your hormones, there's no weight gain and nothing to remember. This was 20 - 30 years ago and they're even better today. The doc is supposed to remove it when you want to become pregnant but I just pulled mine out! (There's a little wire that hangs down - you won't confuse it with a tampon string).

I have a personal opposition to the IUD. The problem is the way they work. IUDs essentially irritate the uterine lining to prevent implantation. The problem is, if a pregnancy does occur, the IUD must be removed. Removing the IUD causes termination of the pregnancy.

I had no problem with the combo pill - worked great. The pill basically fools your body into thinking it's already pregnant. Didn't even get mood swings, actually it pretty much zapped my PMS symptoms.

Mini pill - your weight is a factor, as is whether or not you're breastfeeding. I had some issues with it.

Barrier method and spermicide? Let's just say that's why I now have a bouncing baby boy.

Periiodic abstinence can work if you've got really regular cycles and are psychotic about it - I have a friend that uses it - but boy is there a high "oops" factor...

I have no experience with Depo-Provera or the patch, but a friend of mine fussed that her patch kept trying to fall off so she switched back to the pill.

If you are young pills+ condom if you do not have history of blood clots or high blood pressure that will prevent you from taking the pill. Condoms alone are not safe enough-they break, and it's easy to skip a pill so both at the same time is the best option. If you are not prone to spider veins, the ring or the patch work even better than pills (again +condom)
IUD is a very good option- safe, lasting and cost efficient but ONLY if you are in monogamous relationship in which both partners are STD-free , or you can get STDs very easily

I am currently using the mini pill for the second time as I am breastfeading again. As soon as I am done breastfeading I am going to use Mirena (iud) Best bet is to talk to your healthcae provider and they can help you decide. Mirena is appropriate for women who:
have had at least 1 child, are looking for an effective, reversible form of birth control that's easy to use, are in a monogamous relationship. That's from the little booklet my doctor gave me. go to www.mirenamom.com and it will give you everything about mirena.

As a nurse I would advise not to use the IUD .. yes they have made them better but you still can wind up with tons of problems.. The pill is hard to remember unless you either go to bed or eat at the same time everyday.. My girlfriends use the Depo shot they say they love it.. but gained weight.. I have my tubes tied.. but if I was to need it again I would say depo.. pregnancy lasts longer then 10 lbs LOL
