If calories are units of energy present in food, and energy is used up when that food burns, how many slices of burnt toast are equivalent to a 20 slice loaf of bread?

All depends upon how burnt the toast is. If the toast was totally burnt then no recoverable energy would be left and the number is of slices would be infinite.

If the toast was 50% burnt then 40 slices would be needed.

For the number to be 21 then the toast would need to be 4.8% burn't. This would have released about 60 calories which is enough to make a litre of water hot enough to make tea (and destroy your kitchen). 4.8% burnt toast would be higly unpaletable.

It's exactly the same plus the carcinogens associated with burnt food. The fact that it's burnt is simply a sign of oxidative damage. If you're concerned with weight loss avoid the bread altogether because of its lousy glycemic index score.
I could have included a clever math answer but the caloric difference is certainly not determined by the percentage of toast that's burnt.Metabolism differs from an open flame in the way the calories are burned.

Thats a neat question! I'm guessing that burnt toast would have less calories BUT apparently burnt toast contains carcinogens (cause cancer) so stick to bread!
