Getting disability benefits is a very intricate procedure. Yes, one can get it for depression but there are several factors that are included in the decision. First of all you have to have a history of medical documentation stating what your disability is, what treatment was suggested and the outcome or residual effects of that treatment (at least 6 months of current treatment). Also if you are not immediately allowed for your depression, (because certain conditions are allowed right away), the next factor will be your age, education and work experience. When I state these issues I mean have you worked in positions that a higher level of thinking is needed to do the job, but your mental issues are such that you can no longer do the job and you have been doing the job for most of your life (10-15 years approx.) This is just a sample of how the determination is done. The guidelines are the same for all states, due to disability (SSI/SSA) being a federal program. Some states do have supplemental programs that works along with the SSI program to give benefits.
Since each case is different due to all the factors, you can find out more by contacting the Social Security Administration. Their website is www.ssa.gov

I hope this helps.

Depends- Where are you posting from? In the USA a person with Bi-Polar Disorder, (mood swings from high to low) and schizoaffective disorder- (symptoms of schizophrenia combined with a mood disorder) can get SS DI or SIS without too much trouble if their doctor knows how to write the report for social security. If you are talking a major depression without any bells and whistles it's a little harder.
You must have a serious depression that is supposed to last at least a year. A history of suicide or hospitalizations helps. You probably won't get it on the first try. Nobody does. You should expect to appeal. Choose a lawyer who has experience with disability appeals.

It depends. Is it manic depression? Manic depression is much more worse. They can be become suicidal and may hurt others as well. They will need to contact the SSI office in their area and be evaluated and go from there. If they have a good case they might qualify for benefits.

If your doctor puts you on anti depressants and this is an ongoing problem, then, yes, it is listed as a disability, but you will be reviewed by disability every 6 months and your doctor will need to fill out the report until he/she says it is permanent.

It may depend on what state you are in, but I believe if the depression is severe enough to where you can't leave your house, can't talk to other people, it may qualify that person. I would check with your disability office

Yes it can. If it keeps you from working you can get disability. If you are able to get better and work you can still get payments for the time you were unable to work. Also this may qualify you to get medical help to treat the depression.

Yes, but the problem is if you worked quite a bit and always somewhat sustained your self then they will refuse you. Even if you never did work they would still refuse you have to fight with them that your not lazy and you just can't do it any moore.I worked quite a bit and when I applied for odsp they refuse me and I didn't have the energy to go back to a doctor and have him help me argue for it at the time I had absolutely no energy to work.

It depends on whether or not the depression is severe enough to keep one from getting out a bed.

The disibility people are pretty picky so I would ask a doctor.
