what can cause a dark black stool. i know blood is one possibility, but what else could be causing it?

Pepto-Bismol will do it, as will any supplement containing iron.
Digested blood will make your stools black, and that can indicate a serious health problem.

What have you eaten recently? That's a possible cause. However, you should still have it checked out. Blood in the stool could just be a result of hemorrhoids, but don't take chances.

What you eat affects stool color. Has your diet changed recently? If yes, wait a few days...if not, best coonsult your doctor.

taking iron tablets will do it, to much brandy will not do it unless it causes internal bleeding

Do you drink Guinness?? That can cause it also!
