It is the way caged birds excersize.
Other birds flyu around to get excersize but a bird in a cage cannot so the hold on to the bars and flap their wings like nutters to excersize the muscles.
Even birds in the wild will do this ocasionally, they hold onto a branch and flap like mad.
If you let him fly around, and he doesnt normally, then chances are he will fly into the wall. Sounds daft but it hasn't practised flying and landing so to speak.
So dont worry about the mad flapping.
I had a cockateil that did the same thing.
Pain in the bum when they do it because their feathers and seeeds go all over the place when they do it!

The bird is excercizing his wings. Nothing to worry about except the feathers and seeds that get thrown about. I have four cockatiels and they all do the same if you don't let then out of the cage to fly around.

Is he angry when he's doing it? If not, maybe simple wing exercises...they do like to keep in "shape" you know (ever see a fat bird)! Perhaps his urge to fly...are his wings clipped and/or does he fly around? Has he been doing this forever, or just recently? Introduce a new pet, friend (or baby) to the family? Maybe he's jealous; I'd hold him more....my dogs remind me constantly that "tactile" pats on the back and other affection is needed on a daily basis...hold him and give him kisses or just let him hang on your shoulder-Like a Pirate!!! YAARR MATEY!!!

Being confined in a small space, it's his way of exercise...sometimes, if the bird is a male, he might also find some kind of arousal by doing that. Both things are absolutely normal for a lonely caged bird.

in the experience that your cockatiel is a youthful chook, it ought to be exercising its wings for flight, some thing that all and sundry youthful birds do instinctually. it would additionally be attempting to maintain its stability whilst achieving its acrobatic place i.e. putting the different way up. till your chook is unfavorable its wings and/or feathers, it would be effective.

i had 2 cockatiels a few years back and they use to do the same think...seeds would go flying out of their cage ! i asked the vet and he said they do that for a couple of reasons......one to 'dry' out their feathers and the other is to shake out tiny parasites.......not for exercise like many think.......

usually they are trying to get rid of some of the dander that is on their bodies and also any feathers that need to come off. try once in a while misting your birds with warm water from a squirt bottle, they love it and it escpecially makes them feel good when they are hot .

caged birds get bored and stressed easily. try to give him more stimulation, and let him out for a fly round a room from time to time (door closed, obviously)
