If you sit at the bar, you figure all they do is make your drink. I don't see what the difference is between them and people at say, Mcdonalds. Why don't we tip the people at McDonalds? They get our food AND drinks. I just don't understand...

Also, what is the standard tip for a bartender...is it the norm, 20%?

Being a bartender myself, this question really hits a sore spot. A bartenders usual wage is about 50% of minimum wage. When you tip a bartender well you will see the results in the service and the way your drink is made. Imagine having to stand behind a bar for 8-12 hours a shift and serve a couple hundred people, about half of them being assholes, and the other half trying to get down your pants and saying some of the most disgustiong things to you along the way. Not to mention the liability we face as bartenders. If someone leaves a bar and blow over the legal limit the bartender can get a ticket as well as a fine. The bartender gets ticketed for people fighting, sexual acts on the premises, and about a hundred other reasons. Would you be willing to put up with all of this for $3.00 an hour?? I think not!! If for no other reason tip because if you treat us good, we'll treat you good!

There are certain rules when going to a bar. The first is know what you want, second have the money in your hand. A bartender is a below wage employee that counts on tips to pay his bills. Everyone is entitled to earn a living. When you go up to the bar and its 4 deep, he needs to move the line. When he is quick to move the line, he will make more money and everyone is happy.
When you buy a round of drinks, know what to order, have a fifty hand it to him and leave him a $10.00 tip. You are done and he will be on you all night, so you wont have to wait. Anything more than a 10 wont get you anymore attention anything less will keep you at the back of the line.

For getting good service , i am a bartender and take extra pride in my work and career, it's nice plus helpful in paying bills so I can be your bartender. Even a sincere compliment means something... like I'm doing a good job for you & you recognize it. Yes you don't have to leave a tip but don't get upset when your needs aren't meet ,that extra special way. I gotta take care of those who work with me , 1 st . I lose you as a customer ??? what have I really lost ?? Some one that demands service and attention , of me ... with no tangible benefit to me . Honestly would you sign up long term and commit to such a relationship?? If i can't make the funds to live and afford this job / career , well then sweetie ... your wish may come true... Billy who was working fries last week will be mixing your drink. and he still will be looking for something fromyou. ME, i was only looking for a tip??? thats all!!

The tip is used as a performance incentive. If you are happy with the way the bartender served you, you give him a decent tip (15% for me). If you are extatic and think he's the coolest guy ever, then you give him more. If he spilled your drink all over the counter or forgot what to get you, then you give him little to none.

That way good bartenders make much more money than poor ones, which is the way things should be.

They have provided a service for you. (Hopefully a good one). You tip your hairstylist don't you? The girl who does your nails? The waiter at a sit-down restaurant? Why shouldn't you tip your bartender? And, if you are really happy with the service you got at a McDonalds, why not tip that person?

Tip 15-20%.

Bartenders usually make like 2.00 an hr like a waitress so the tips make up the differences and because its nice to do so.

Well if they served drinks and had a better atmosphere I would probably tip at McDonalds.
If you were pretty enough you should be getting free drinks at the bar

You tip the bartender so she won't ignore you when you want to order your next drink.
