I have ibs. I did have those symptoms that you are describing, but except with diarrhea. It definitely sounds like Ibs,but it is important to rule out any other disease like Crohns or Ulcerative Colitis. Sometimes they have quite similar symptoms. Make an appointment with a gastroenterlogist. He /She can help you manage ibs or test for other things that could be causing these symptoms. He will most likely do a rectal exam, stool culture, and blood test. He may also want to do a colonoscopy to physically check for things in the bowels.

Have had it for years. Don't think there is a "cure" for it but there are some things we can do to help. I was constipated and had rectal bleeding. Had a sigmoidoscopy, upper and lower GIs, a few colonoscopies ... This could have been avoided if I had changed my diet. I was not eating enough fiber and drinking enough water. My last colonoscopy was almost 5 years ago. What I do now is:
- breakfast - fiber (half soluble and half non-soluble) - cooked oat bran or cheerios, 1/2 cup prune juice, followed by 8 ounces of water.
- lunch - more gentle fiber - Smucker's natural peanut butter on oat bread, tea, again end with a glass of water.
- dinner - meat, veggie, potatoes, salad, followed by a glass of water.
- TV snack - I pick on a small dish of dry Cheerios and pretend they're cashews (calories you know).

My GI physician is a great guy with a sense of humor. He said "You don't tell the bowels what to do, they tell you what to do." He meant, if you get "the" cramp, do your best to take care of business at the time. He said we need fiber - both kinds - soluble and non-soluble, that's why I chose oat. If you have ever tried All Bran, you know the difference.

Try to eat around the same time so you can habit-train your system. You also need to exercise. Gets the system going.

With all that said, you should see your doctor to be sure it isn't something serious. Hey, you never know. Good luck.

IBS is a type of anxiety confined to bowels. Tenesmus (mild pain abdomen with a desire but not the need to ease)is the main symptom. The desire increases when one deviates from routine, starts for an examination hall, joins a new job, meets BF or GF for the first time etc .It is mild but it causes nuisance.Loperamide tablet temporarily works wonderfully. The problem markedly decreases if "bio feedback" is practised. This is done by exercising pelvic muscles and sphincter of anus.Everyday anal sphincter is exercised by voluntarily contracting it as though to stop stool coming out. Some weeks of practice helps a lot.
