This is perfectly normal at this age... I have worked with preschoolers for 14 years teaching the twos and threes, and this is just not something they are developmentally able to do yet. My own daughter is 2 1/2, and she jumps the same way. It is so funny to watch, and as long as he continues to practice, he'll get it. It takes a while for their brains to be able to work both sides of the body in conjunction with one another. In the meantime, enjoy your little non-jumping bean!! ; )

Your 2 yr old may simply not have the leg and back strength yet to be able to lift his own weight off the ground. The head of an average adult is around 8 lbs, the head of a child is nearly the same weight. The head is one of the few features of the human body that doesn't change much over our lifetimes. Toddlers heads are nearly 1/4 of their body mass. Go grab some books that weigh 1/4 your weight and try jumping with them ballanced on your head, you will know then what experience your child is having trying to learn to jump.

I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and teach 2 and 3 yr olds. Your child is right on target. It isn't until the child is closer to their third birthday that their feet leave the ground while jumping :)

I pretty much agree with those who said that his muscles probably aren't ready for that action yet and he'll do it when they're developed and his coordination improve.
Out of curiousity, do you recall when your 4 year old was first able to jump? (I don't mean you should compare them, just using the older one as a sort of guideline really)

Some kids learn to do things faster and for some it takes some time. I am sure with time he will be jumping like no other. So give him some time and stop worrying. All the five fingers of your hand are not a like.

Every child develops their large muscle coordination at different times. It may be that he will take a while longer to master this milestone. This is fairly normal, but if it persists by age 3, then I would worry about it.

My daughter just learned to jump and she just turned 2 a few weeks ago. I wouldn't worry ... he'll get it soon :O)
And I agree ... it's impossible to explain to them how to do it!

I wouldn't worry about him being unable to jump at his age. Children do things at their own pace, not ours. When he is ready,he will jump.
