No one can answer this the way it is asked, because it requires reading the mind of the dog. Nobody can do that. We can just tell you how we've seen dogs behave, and I've seen plenty of dogs and cats who got along famously. But that doesn't get us inside the dog's head.

Well I introduced a half grown small mixed breed pup to my household's three residents cats.
The cats tolerate the dog. The dog wants to be friends with everybody...human, canine and feline. The cats will occassionally share a sunny patch by the back door with the dog, but not cozy snuggling yet.
The cats are "alpha" in this family. Human. Cat. Dog is the pecking order around here.

If it's anything like my dog then resigned defeat! At first it is as a potential threat both to dog and owners but after time they come to see them as "that hissy thing in the corner" not as a dog as they will not play and they smell too different to be a dog but not a threat either, just another animal

My Chihuahua is my cat's personal play toy. He gets pounced on all the time. So I imagine my dog views this cat as a psychotic alien that brainwashed us to allow it to live at our house and he's probably planning some crazy way to send the martian back to mars.

It depends on the dog and how well they are socialised. In some dogs, the hunt instinct is high and they tend to be the pooches that chase cats. In others, they are best friends.

My dog thought of the cat as his friend. They would sleep together and even play with each other. They also seemed to miss each other when they were separated.

Please understand that all that 'rubbing against your leg' stuff is purely manipulative, motivated by self-interest and is basically saying 'feed me'. It does not compare with the genuine affection you feel when you get home and are covered liberally with lukewarm slobber.
